Catherine: inspiring girls with her strength and optimism

At just 15 years old, Catherine has already achieved remarkable milestones. With huge enthusiasm and determination, she joined Awamu’s tailoring programme and graduated with a 1st grade in her Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) certificate. Alongside her technical skills, she has also mastered speaking, reading, and writing in English and managing accounts - skills she is already using to transform her life and build her future.

Originally from Lira, Catherine came to Kampala on the promise of continuing her education. But instead of the opportunities she hoped for, she was forced into gruelling work as a housemaid. Burdened with heavy chores, denied adequate food, and paid just 20,000 UGX per month (£4.00), Catherine endured harsh conditions. Isolated from her family and forbidden from contacting her mother, she felt trapped and alone.

Her turning point came when a concerned neighbour noticed her distress and connected her with a specialist teacher in our catch-up education programme. Recognising the urgency of Catherine’s situation, she brought her to the safety of Awamu’s Nansamba Safe Haven.

With access to education, vocational training, and a supportive community, Catherine put her drive and passion into learning new skills and reclaiming her confidence.

Through her hard work and the support of Awamu’s programmes, she is confidently pursuing her dreams, creating opportunities for herself, and inspiring others with her strength and optimism.
