GIRLS IN THE SLUMS ARE UNDER ATTACK

The pandemic has caused a huge surge in violence against girls in the slums of Kampala.

Help us step-up our lifesaving services - they could be the difference between life and death for young women and girls experiencing violence.

With your support our specialist staff will provide girls with the building blocks they need to begin a new life, free from fear.

Your Support Creates Life-Changing Moments!

“Joining school is the happiest moment of my life. I’m so grateful that my dream is now on track.” — Catherine, 16.

The Harsh Reality for Many Girls in Kampala

Catherine struggled to return to school after COVID-19. For four years, she worked as a street vendor, facing constant harassment and danger.

Overwhelmed by an attempted assault, she found refuge with a group of women under a tree. It was here that one of our Community Mentors met her, listened to her story and connected her with our program.

Today, Catherine is back in school, pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher.

Childhood should be filled with dreams, laughter and possibilities. Yet for many girls in the slums of Kampala, growing up is often overshadowed by fear, trauma, and a lack of hope.

Why our work matters

At Awamu, our programmes are designed with girls-for girls. Working in partnership with grassroots NGO Tusitukirewamu, we provide vital support that empowers them to overcome the challenges the increidble challenges they face.

Our holistic approach includes:

  • Access to life-saving healthcare: Addressing urgent health needs to support well-being.

  • Counselling and Mentorship: Helping girls navigate life's challenges.
